Liverpool Sunflowers has just received £200 from local shoppers thanks to Asda’s Chosen By You, Given By Us scheme.
The fundraising project aims to support local charities situated within a 1 mile radius of its Smithdown Road Store, in order to give something back to the local community.
Liverpool Sunflowers Project Director, Joan Elmer said: “We are extremely grateful to our local Asda and its shoppers for their generous donation which really will make a massive difference to the lives of local people who access our service. “Every donation is so important to us – no matter how small or large – as every penny goes a long way to help local people who are suffering from cancer, enabling us to provide advice, counselling, alternative therapies and group support session to them and their families.”
Maureen Blundell has been a regular visitor to the Liverpool Sunflowers centre since 2009, when she was first diagnosed with cancer. She said: “Liverpool Sunflowers has been my lifeline; I would be lost without all of the help and support that its staff and volunteers have provided, and I am so happy that Asda has chosen to support us.”
The charity now plans to use the money to help it continue to fund some art and crafts sessions, for some of its service users.
Joan Elmer added, “Our ethos at Sunflowers is that shared experiences help to build a strong community in the fight against cancer, and sessions like these are hugely important as they enable people who are battling with cancer to express themselves creatively and deal with some of the emotions that they face.”
